Anchorage RYA Sea School

RYA Cruising Instructor course.

Our five day RYA Cruising Instructor course and assessment is conducted by the Principal of the Anchorage Sea School, Tony Agar MRIN, who has over 10 years professional teaching experience in delivering rewarding and effective sailing courses.

Applicants for the Cruising Instructor course must be commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmasters and over the 5 days afloat we aim to provide you with the skills you need to run a consistent and well structured Sail Cruising Course.

We will cover:-

  • The syllabus in detail to ensure your course is not only comprehensive but effective.
  • The different teaching techniques.
  • How to plan effective individual teaching sessions,
  • Delivering successful demonstrations every time,
  • How to brief and debrief your students,
  • How to appraise and develop your own performance,
  • How to successfully manage your course and avoid customer complaints.
  • The legal and insurance framework.

We do this through a mixture of discussions, practical demonstrations, close examination of the syllabus, careful planing the overall content of a course to ensure that all parts of the syllabus are covered. There will be a certain element of Role Playing throughout the course, where students alternate between the role of Instructor and Student. And of course debriefing!

The assessment part of the course is not aimed to be a stressful test; rather it is designed to be a productive experience where you will learn new skills, and appraise your existing skills, in a relaxed environment. The successful Cruising Instructor candidate will be expected to give convincing demonstrations of any part of the RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper syllabus. This includes: knots, sail-handling, man overboard, mooring, pilotage by day and night, IRPCS, basic meteorology, navigation and skippering.

It goes without saying that your knowledge of the syllabus contained in the current RYA publications G15 and G27 and boat handling skills should already be up to scratch before attending this course but above all, remember the hallmarks of a good instructor are patience, enthusiasm and a good sense of humour.

Cruising Instructor candidates who reach the required standard will be awarded the RYA Cruising Instructor endorsement which is valid for 5 years. After this time, cruising instructors must either re-take the Cruising Instructor course or pass the Yachtmaster Instructor’s Assessment. If successful, you will be able to work at any RYA Centre requiring Cruising Instructors, and who knows, we may be able to find some work for you!

If you wish to progress further, to Yachtmaster Instructor Level, you will already need to be a Cruising Instructor. Yachtmaster Instructor Exams are organised by the RYA themselves and should be booked directly with the RYA; but you would be welcome to join one of our Crusing Instructor courses as a refresher before under going your RYA assessment.

All our Cruising Instructor courses are timed to be the week before an RYA Instructor Assessment week.

The cost of this couse is £495
There is an additional charge of £40 payable to the RYA for the endorsement of your Certificate of Competence unless you are already a member.

Whilst at sea, students will be accommodated in shared cabins and all meals will be provided on board. Marina fees and meals ashore are split amongst the crew.
